Space Maintainers
Baby teeth are not just placeholders — they actively guide the permanent teeth developing beneath them. When a baby tooth is lost too early (from decay, trauma, or extraction), neighbouring teeth can drift into the empty space, blocking the permanent tooth's path. A space maintainer holds that space open to guide proper eruption and prevent crowding.
How It Works
Assessment & X-Rays
We evaluate the gap and surrounding teeth with x-rays to confirm the permanent tooth is developing normally and determine the best maintainer type.
Impressions
Precise impressions are taken to fabricate a custom-fitted appliance designed for your child's specific anatomy.
Appliance Fabrication
The space maintainer is crafted in a dental lab — typically a stainless steel band-and-loop or similar design.
Cementation
The maintainer is cemented onto an adjacent tooth and will hold the space open until the permanent tooth begins to erupt.
Monitoring & Removal
We monitor the space at regular appointments. The maintainer is removed once the permanent tooth begins to emerge naturally.
Benefits of Space Maintainers
- Prevent neighbouring teeth from drifting into the gap
- Guide permanent tooth into its correct position
- Avoid crowding and future orthodontic treatment
- Simple, unobtrusive appliance children adapt to quickly
- Monitored and removed once no longer needed
- Significantly more cost-effective than future orthodontic correction

Q.Does my child really need a space maintainer for a baby tooth?
It depends on which tooth was lost and how far away the permanent tooth is. We'll evaluate x-rays and advise whether a maintainer is necessary for your child's specific situation.
Q.Will the space maintainer hurt?
The placement is comfortable. Some children feel minor pressure or awareness of the appliance for a few days — this resolves quickly.
Q.Can my child eat normally with a space maintainer?
Yes, with some modifications — we advise avoiding sticky and hard foods that could dislodge or damage the appliance.
Q.How long will my child need the maintainer?
This varies greatly by age and the tooth involved — anywhere from a few months to a few years, until the permanent tooth starts erupting.
